My first experience with LED headlamps was in Iraq. I was deployed to Camp Liberty near Baghdad and lived in a trailer that had three rooms. I shared the middle room with my roommate Sergeant Ruiz. He was really nice and gave me an LED headlamp when I first arrived I think because he just had an extra one and was trying to help me out. It was a revelation. I’d seen the things before but had never used them. I thought they were pretty dorky. But it was just so handy.

The lighting in among the trailers was terrible and I had quite a hike to get the the shower trailer. Also Sergeant Ruiz and I worked different shifts so often when I got up he was sleeping and vice versa. The headlamp he gave me was great. I could get ready without turning on the light and didn’t have to try to put on pants while holding a flashlight. The headlamp was handy in these situations but where I used it the most and loved it more than my own mother was when I rode my bike.

I didn’t have a car when I was deployed so the quickest way to get to work, which was a solid 3 miles away was on a bike. I was required to have a bike light and it worked OK. But when I strapped the headlamp to my helmet it was like a whole new world. The road ahead was lit by the bike light but I could look around and see right where I was looking. This came in handy for dodging soldiers in those dang camouflage uniforms at night.

I thought my headlamp was pretty cool. It had three different intensities you could set it on and was pretty comfortable. But the one my roommate had was even better. It was an led lenser headlamp and it had the batteries in the back so it balanced on his head (mine was heavy in the front) and it had a focusing ring in front that he could rotate to go from spotlight to floodlight. It was also way brighter than mine.

Anyway I fell in love with the things and now I have half a dozen or so all for different purposes. The other articles on my site will give you a good idea of what to look for in an LED headlamp depending on the way you’d like to use it.
